"Corporate Governance Code”: President Buhari Appoints New Chairman & Executive Secretary of Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the immediate removal and replacement of Jim Obazee, the Executive Secretary of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN).

A statement issued by the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, on Monday in Abuja, said the president also approved the reconstitution of the agency’s board.

The statement also said that President Buhari approved a Chairman and a new Executive Secretary for the council.

According to the statement, the new Council as approved by the President has Adedotun Sulaiman, as Chairman and Daniel Asapokhai as the new Executive Secretary.

Sulaiman was a former Managing Partner/Director of Arthur Anderson and, later, Accenture.

He is a Chartered Accountant and a graduate of the University of Lagos and Harvard Business School, while Asopokhai Was a partner and a Financial Reporting Specialist at the PricewaterHouseCoopers (PWC), Nigeria.

He graduated from the University of Lagos and the University of Pretoria.

“President Muhammadu Buhari has also instructed the Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment to invite the nineteen ministries, departments and agencies of the Federal Government and private sector organizations specified in the FRC Act to nominate members of the board of the council,’’ the statement said.

Recall that the FRCN revised the “Corporate Governance Code” in October 2016 to say that Religious Leaders and Heads of NGOs are only allowed a maximum of 20 years in office before they hand-over to another individual. The said code, also directed that any leader above 70 years of age should also hand-over to another individual.

Russia Says It Was Never Involved in Hacker Attacks Against U.S.

The Kremlin on Monday refuted accusations of Russia’s involvement in hacker attacks during the U.S. 2016 presidential election, saying that it was a “tiresome witch-hunt.’’

“We continue to categorically rule out any involvement of Moscow and Russian officials and agencies in any hacker attacks,’’ Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said.

Earlier this month, the U.S. intelligence community published the declassified part of the report.

“Assessing Russian Activities and Intentions in Recent U.S. Elections,’’ claiming that “Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered an influence campaign in 2016 aimed at the U.S. presidential election.’’

The report said Moscow’s action aimed to “undermine public faith in the U.S. democratic process,’’ via Russian government agencies, state-funded media, paid social media users as well as hackers, in order to secure Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election.

Peskov said that the allegations in the U.S. intelligence community publication had no proof and had been prepared at an “amateur, emotional level,’’ which was hardly applicable to the highly professional work of high-quality security services.

On Sunday, the Trump team said Trump had accepted the U.S. intelligence community’s findings that Russia was behind the cyber attacks targeting the presidential election, accusations that Trump had also repeatedly rebuffed.

But Trump has said that the alleged hacking activities have no impact on the election results and he didn’t directly acknowledge Moscow’s responsibility.

WikiLeaks has also rejected the intelligence report that Russia passed on leaked information to the whistle-blowing site as part of efforts to influence the recent U.S. elections.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange dismissed a report published on Friday by the CIA, FBI and National Security Agency as “embarrassing’’ and said it lacked evidence.

The report was an example of how “the U.S. intelligence services have been politicised by the Obama administration,’’ Assange said.

Assange said WikiLeaks was careful to protect its sources, however, the information it published, including emails and documents from the U.S. Democratic Party and John Podesta, Head of Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, were from sources that “were not a state party.’’

“If our source were a state, we would have a lot less concern in attempting to protect them,’’ he said.

Assange urged current members in charge of U.S. government computer servers to download and protect materials that otherwise risked “mass destruction’’ during the transition to the new administration under Donald Trump.

“Our philosophy is that such information is a part of history,’’ he said.

Assange also said he doubted that whistle-blowers would be safe under a Trump administration, and rejected claims that WikiLeaks had refrained from publishing leaked information from the Republican National Committee.

Anambra State Women Association of Southern California – Group Donates Equipment To General Hospital Onitsha

The Anambra State Women Association of Southern California (ASWASC) has donated hospital equipment worth two million Naira to the general hospital Onitsha, as part of efforts to improve healthcare services in the state.

Presenting the equipment yesterday at a ceremony attended by the state commissioner for health, Dr Joe Akabuike, the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Dr Ebelechukwu Anugwu, the Secretary of ASWASC among other top government officials, Mrs. Chineye Ojukwu said the gesture is to bring the maternity ward to world standard and improve medical services in the hospital.

The equipment includes three stethoscopes, two baby cots, one vacuum extractor, two wheel chairs, one electric suction machine, six sponge holding forceps, six artery forceps (curved and straight), six Kocherís (straight and curved), three kidney dishes, two circumcision scissors and two gallipots among others.

Mrs Ojukwu who represented president of the association, Barr. Amaka Akudinobi pleaded that pregnant and nursing mothers be allowed to enjoy the items, while the hospital management should ensure that the gadgets were put to good use. She also promised that the association would reach out to other hospitals and maternity homes in the state to ensure that quality is maintained and lives of pregnant women are saved.

Helio Neto – Chapecoense Plane Crash Survivor Meets His New Team Members [PHOTOS]

Brazil’s Football Club Chapecoense was almost wiped out in a devastating plane crash in Colombia last year. The club has signed 27 new players to replace those tragically killed for the new season. And one of the 3 survivors of the crash got to meet them and give them some words of advice.

The southern Brazilian club were en route to Medellin to face Atletico Nacional in the final of the Copa Sudamericana when their jet hit a mountain, killing 71 people.

Centre back Helio Neto, pictured above and fullback Alan Ruschel survived, as did reserve goalkeeper Jackson Follmann, who had part of his leg amputated. Neto attended the presentation on crutches, where he chatted to the youth players who have been called up to the first time in the wake of the tragedy.

• Reports say the club reserved shirt numbers for two of the survivors in the hope they can play again.

Nana Akufo-Addo Sworn In As Ghana’s President

Nana Akufo-Addo has been sworn in as Ghana’s new president  at a ceremony applauded for its easy transition of power. In a speech as he took office, the President said

“I will not let the good people of Ghana down.”

“I pledge to do my best to move this country to higher level of development; I will not let the good people of Ghana down. We should move on to deepen our democracy.”

The 72-year-old president also promised to work with Ghana’s neighbours “to ensure stability on the African continent.” The new president, a lawyer who served as Ghana’s foreign minister in 2008, vowed to build on the West African country’s economic success.

Akufo-Addo got 53.85 per cent of the votes in Ghana’s September election to defeat incumbent John Mahama who got 44 per cent of the votes. Report says the peaceful transfer of power from ex-president Mahama was drawing special attention.

Fourteen African heads of state including Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari and Kenyan president, Uhuru Kenyatta attended the ceremony in Accra.

Recession Effects Will Not Touch My People – Gov Willie Obiano

Chief Willie Obiano has reassured Ndi Anambra that no one shall feel the  impact of the present economic recession in the new year. The Governor disclosed this in his new year, 2017 message to Ndi Anambra. He promised that the state economy would remain robust and viable in the new year, saying this would be guaranteed by the strategic steps his administration was taking in injecting a lot of resources into the system.

These, he noted, include the economic palliatives announced last year to give the very low income earners in the state some financial respite, the N20 million per community choose-your-project initiative, and the numerous investments being attracted across the various sectors amongst others.

Gov Obiano assured that as soon as the 2017 budget was approved, Communities in the State would begin to benefit from another round of the N20 million per community choose-your-project development initiative.

He pointed out that his administration had in the year’s budget estimate which it presented to the House of Assembly, multiplied the amount it budgeted for Agriculture in the past year by five times in its bid to re-energize the sector to play its expected role in creating an alternative for IGR for both the State Government and the people.

Chief Obiano also said the increase in the Central Bank of Nigeria ‘s financial support to Micro Small and Medium Enterprises in the State from N1.5 billion to N3 billion will ensure that more agro-based industries will spring up to support the food sufficiency vision of his administration and expressed happiness that Ndi Anambra were beginning to key into the vision of the state to revolutionize Agriculture.

While wishing Ndi Anambra a happy and prosperous new year, Gov Obiano urged them to be proud of who they are and have faith in God and his administration as according to him, he will not relent fulfilling his social contract with the people.

UNIZIK UPDATE – Important Info For Pending Admission List of Qualified Candidates

Let’s recall that the UNIZIK Matriculation has been postponed to 27th January 2017, therefore all Pending Admission will be released before the date.

The General Public especially (candidates) are hereby informed that the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka will soon release the pending admission list of qualified students. The delay is inevitable to sort out issues related to the admission. As soon as the issues are fully resolved with regulatory authorities, the list will be released. The University is also aware that based on the current calendar of events the matriculation ceremony, if it holds as scheduled, may affect new students.

This is therefore to reassure parents and candidates that the University will consider the participation of all first year students in the matriculation ceremony and may necessarily adjust the date to accommodate all new students.

Please be rest assured that the Nnamdi Azikiwe University is mindful of the anxiety of some of these waiting candidates and will do everything possible to make sure that when admitted they will be assisted as far as possible to quickly integrate themselves in the University.

Mikel Obi joins Chinese club Tianjin TEDA after 11 years with Chelsea

Super Eagles captain, John Mikel Obi has become the latest ex- Premier League star to make a big-money move to Chinese Super League after completing his medicals with Tianjin TEDA yesterday. The midfielder, who had been frozen out of first-team football by coach Antonio Conte this season, will reportedly earn £140,000 a week.

The 29-year-old who arrived Stamford Bridge in 2006, is understood to have signed a three-year deal, after a successful spell in England, winning the Champions League, two Premier League titles and four FA Cups.

6,330 HIV Patients Registered In Libya In 2016 – WHO

 

The World Health Organisation, WHO, said that 6,330 HIV patients registered in Libya in 2016. The UN Health Agency said in a statement that 10 people also died in the out-gone year as a result of inability to access anti-retroviral (ARV) drugs.
“Last year, there were 6,330 registered HIV patients in Libya; 10 people aged 18 or 19, died due to lack of ARV drugs.
“Many other patients have been forced to scale back on their drug regimens, meaning that many are now in the advanced stages of the disease and that they face increasingly high mortality rates.”

The global health body said just a few weeks ago, it began distributing much-needed ARV drugs to patients living with HIV in Libya, following the country’s collapse in medical services and inability to provide life-saving drugs.
“After the start of the country’s civil war in 2011, rates of HIV have continued to rise.
“A recent WHO analysis of the country’s health system indicates a general collapse in medical services, including a lack of drug availability.
“Severe shortages of ARV drugs are threatening the lives of those with HIV and have even led to public protests demanding that the Ministry of Health take immediate action to resolve the problem.’’
It said following the pressure on the ministry, it subsequently reached out to WHO for support in drug procurement and distribution.
According to it, so far, WHO has provided three months of drugs to some 450 patients?
“The agency is working closely with the Ministry to develop and implement surveillance and health system assessment mechanisms, particularly those regarding blood safety,’’ WHO said.
WHO said the initiative was intended to reinstate the HIV-related infrastructure that was halted at the start of the war in 2011.
“For years, cultural barriers and stigmatisation have impeded effective HIV prevention programmes.
“The WHO is advocating for universal access to HIV treatment and care by focusing on planning, surveillance, and delivery of healthcare services to HIV patients in order to undermine some of these barriers.
“In order to meet its goals, the WHO is requesting 1.2 million dollars from donors, which would allow the agency to guarantee a supply of ARV drugs throughout 2017.”

Nigerian Lady Emerges Britian’s Best Pharmacist, 2016

                                

Britain’s favourite pharmacist has been announced. Olutayo Arikawe, 39, from Dudley has been named the national winner of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s annual I Love My Pharmacist competition, which celebrates the exceptional contribution pharmacists make to patient care on a daily basis across the UK.

Olutayo who runs a Community Pharmacy in Dudley, was shortlisted by an expert panel to become one of the 23 finalists. Thousands of members of the public then voted for their favourite pharmacist. Olutayo was announced as the regional winner for Midlands and East.
She, along with the five other regional finalists, presented to the judging panel who would determine the eventual winner of the competition. The judges decided Olutayo was most deserving of the prize due to clear evidence of her going above and beyond to improve the lives of her patients.

Queen Elizabeth nearly shot by her guardsman as she strolled the palace grounds at 3a.m

Queen Elizabeth narrowly escaped being shot by one of her guardsmen after she was seen wandering the garden of what is believed to be Buckingham Palace at 3 a.m.

The queen who is known to walk around the palace whenever she can't sleep was taking one of such walks, dressed in a winter coat, when the guard came across the Queen and taking precaution, asked, “Who’s that?” It was only then that he realised it was the monarch.


He was reported to have exclaimed “Bloody hell, Your Majesty. I nearly shot you” to which the Queen replied, “That’s quite all right. Next time I’ll ring through beforehand so you don’t have to shoot me.”

In 2013, Prince Andrew had the same encounter in the same garden when he was confronted by a policeman who mistook him for an intruder in broad daylight.

The vigilance of the security guards is quite understandable considering how often intruders have scaled the fence and gotten into the palace in the past.

In August 2016, a 22-year-old man was arrested after he climbed over a security fence just after 4 a.m. and was spotted by officers monitoring the CCTV. In May 2016 Denis Hennessy, 41, climbed over the fence and roamed freely in the palace grounds.

When he was found by officers he repeatedly asked them “Is Ma’am in?”

In 2013 a man was found after 10 p.m. in one of the State Rooms after he scaled the fence.

Festivities! LAWMA Begins Massive Evacuation Of Refuse In Lagos

The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has begun a massive evacuation of refuse across the state. Commissioner for the Environment, Dr. Samuel Babatunde Adejare, who disclosed this yesterday, explained that LAWMA was mobilized to cart away the backlog of refuse generated during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.


According to him, the government is aware of challenges before LAWMA and is addressing it with the new sanitation initiative, tagged the Cleaner Lagos Initiative (CLI) with the projection to inject technology and resources into waste management through Public Private Partnership in 2017.
Consequent upon the new initiative, LAWMA will face solely its regulatory role to bring about efficient control and monitoring of the emergent and old private players in the sector.
Adejare assured Lagosians of the commitment of the Akinwunmi Ambode administration to cleaner and sustainable environment, saying LAWMA was on top of the situation as it had since commenced the carting away of the backlog especially in Surulere, Igando, Ikotun, Egbeda, Ogba, Agege, Ikeja and other parts of the state.
