Fans Think ‘Rogue One’ Has Unveiled Star Wars’ First Gay Couple

Despite only being released in cinemas on December 16, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story unsurprisingly had a killer weekend, raking in over 200 million dollars at the box office.

Fans who have been to see the movie have reported that Disney may have created their first gay couple for the Star Wars universe.

After watching what was arguably Star Wars’ most diverse cast yet, fans noted that two rebels in particular, Chirrut Imwe and Baze Malbus seemed like an old married couple.
Played by Donnie Yen and Jiang Wen respectively, the potential for Star Wars’ LGBT couple was picked up on by Vulture’s Kyle Buchanan who suggested that this could be much more than Finn and Poe’s bromance in The Force Awakens. He placed particular significance in their knowing glances to one another and the line:

“I don’t need luck, I have you.”
While the film’s director, Gareth Edwards didn’t officially confirm that the pair were indeed a couple, he told Yahoo News:

“I don’t mind people reading into [Chirrut and Baze’s relationship]. I think that’s all good. Who knows? You’d have to speak to them.”
It’s still sad that despite constant promises from directors like J.J. Abrams that LGBT characters are coming in future Star Wars films, we’ve yet to have our first obviously out and proud character. Especially since sci-fi has always been a place where sexuality can be less of a contentious issue.
