James Silas – Slams Artistes Who Dishonored The #Headies Awards “Bunch of Ingrates”

James Silas who is an Online & TV Content Manager was amongst the persons that didn’t take in the actions of Nigeria Top Artistes that were mentioned to take awards but didn’t show to appreciate the awards which on its own made the event turn out to be boring, dishonoring and disorganized.

Lets hear what he has to say below;

First of all, I will agree with you if you say the Headies 2016 was trashy, boring… blah, blah, blah… or that one plaque or the other should have gone to XYZ instead of ABC but as you carry your protest placard around, remember that you can save us the trouble by hosting your own music award.

The last time I checked, I did not see any music award in Nigeria that has made any artiste as mad as P-Square when they did not pick any of their 5 nominations in 2008 or Olamide that felt Lil Kesh deserved the Next rated award over Reekardo Banks in 2015.

I have not seen any music award that gave any artiste a sense of fulfillment like it gave to Dr. Sid in 2011 or to Yemi Alade in 2015.

What do you know about disappointment? Ask Jesse Jagz, who probably deserved the Rap album of the year award in 2014 or Sound Sultan who was not even nominated in the Best Conscious song of 2011 not to talk of winning it, and not forgetting Yemi Alade again who thought she should have gotten the Next Rated award over Patoranking in 2014.

Happiness is what M.I felt in 2008 after his song, “Talk About It” won the Best Rap Single of the year. It is also what Overdose, Asa, Wande Coal, Omawumi, Wizkid, Davido and the rest felt when they won the Next Rated Award in their respective year.

Should I talk about having ‘a sense of appreciation’? Oh, you can ask Mr. Laolu Akins, DJ Jimmy Jatt, Kenny & D1, Obi Asika, Phillip Trimnell, FAJ, Onyeka Onwenu, Kwam 1, Femi Kuti and other Headies Hall of Fame recipients since the inception of the awards.

If you can’t relate to the aforementioned, then you may want to consider people like Timi Dakolo, Bez, Adekunle Gold, Aramide, TY-Mix… all of whom have been shown that their hard work has not been in vain. You may also want to creep into the mind of Ill Bliss who won the best Rap Album of the year and Lyricist on roll award last night.

I could go on and on…

Now, as one who has followed the Headies awards since 2006, I just might be politically correct if I say that some of our artistes today are just a bunch of ingrates!

I listened as AY tried to make excuses about how a lot of artistes are busy with the season’s business and I totally respect that, but I can also tell you that ‘some’ from the ‘most’ of those artistes were actually in their houses, watching the show on HipTv. Some ‘others’ were in their rooms at Eko Hotel there watching the show as well on HipTv. The few that were not in the country, or out of Lagos were following the show on Twitter. Do you know why Simi had to apologize for not being available to pick her award earlier?

Bottom line is that the Headies is a big deal – both old and new artistes are interested in the Headies and how the awards will pan out every year, but I don’t understand why you won’t attend the event. I mean, it is not by force to attend the show, but shame on every artiste who chose to shun the awards for no reason last night.

It is actually sad to watch some of these artistes grow from patronizing the “industry” to disrespecting it after they get to the “top.” It is easy to celebrate when you win your first award and be rude when you lose on the next.

Some artistes feel like they’ve won too many headies, hence, one more will not make any difference to their shelf-full-of-plaques, but before you go on – note that no Nigerian artiste has bagged as many awards as 2Face Idibia has done in his still-very-active career. Also, note that Sound Sultan has intellectually donated to the careers of artistes like Wizkid, Chidinma, Seyi Shay, Sean Tizzle… it’s a long list, yet he stays ‘ordinary’, humble and genuinely winning.

I dare to say without fear or favour that the Headies is the only prestigious and credible music award we have in Nigeria today. Wouldn’t it be nice for any artiste who has won before to come out now and expose the organizers of the awards for dashing them the award because they influenced it to their favour?

I mean, expose the organizers if you paid or slept with any of them to give you an award at any point in time. Have you won a headie before because you know somebody somewhere who influenced it on your behalf? Be bold and fearless to speak up.

The least we can do in Nigeria today is to support the organizers of the Headies. I mean, how many music award shows in Africa rewards an up and coming artiste with a brand-new SUV? Have you seen or held the gold plated Headie plaque? You need to ask Mr. Eazi how he feels right now, especially after he was snubbed at the last Ghana Music Awards… the Headies is not any artiste’s birth-right, yet amidst criticism and heavy tongue-lash, the Headies has only grown bigger as the most wanted music award in Nigeria.

I saw when Phyno won the best song of the year award for “Fada Fada.” He probably didn’t think it was a big deal as he refused to go backstage to do the production interviews like every other winner had done. Not even after the producer of the show, Ayo Animashaun came to meet him in person… so fucking rude!

I think what some of these artistes need to know is that time will happen to your career. Ask the Remedies, Jazzman Olofin, Stella Monye, Zaaki Adzee… they were at the awards last night. Excuse me – “Pana” can be the hottest song right now, but do you know that while we await Yemi Alade’s third album, she is yet to release any song, bigger than “Johnny”? Or did Sean Tizzle release a bigger song than “Sho Lee” that I missed? Should I go on?

It’s okay to criticize the Headies in every way possible but hey, the Grammy gets even worse, but how many individuals can dedicate their time to celebrate and reward artistes that don’t even care about you or how you managed to pay for the venue of the event?

The theme of the award says ‘Create. Think. Recreate.’ I’ll want to advise some of our artistes to ‘Rethink’ before they decide to snub or disrespect the Headies.

I wish y’all a Merry Christmas!
