In case you missed it, there was something of a brewing drama between the Reggae Blues crooner and his former record label all November long.
Recall that he was formerly signed to Five Star Music which is home to singer Kcee, Skiibi and X-Busta but decided it was time to move following the expiration of his contract, obviously from reasons we cannot exactly say at this time.
Insiders say it is not far from commission and percentage issues, creative control and lack of a sense of ownership in the music label.
As a result, there have been media statements in the wake of this particularly from Harrysong, and the fans have watched with bated breaths to see if truly he is the muse behind the music at the former label as his comments lately seem to suggest.
As critics, we are also on the look-out for new music from both parties, because as it is already with Alter Plate’s front liner Harry going solo and his erstwhile colleagues Kcee and co doing their thing, we have two parties from the ensuing situation.
Already, with his departure comes growing concerns about record label dynamics in Nigeria with respect to their sustainability and the incidence of artiste-label fracas.
In recent times, several notable musicians have severed ties with former music labels to set up shop independently.
While this allows for more ‘creativity’ as some will argue, it remains to be seen how moves from the likes of Ice Prince from Chocolate City, Lil Kesh from YBNL and Iyanya from Triple MG play out in the end.
There will always be two sides to every story so we can only wait, watch after which we can analyse.
But back to Harrysong and Alter Plate, we think he might be making a bold statement in these new photos. Actually, he could be making several obvious statements, we will break them down here.
1. Can you feel it?
2. This is how I made Reggae Blues
3. There is more where that came from
4. No man can bring me down, this is divine
5. They thought I couldn’t do this alone
6. But I'm the actual business, man...
7. I'm also about the music
8. I set up Alter Plate because independence is everything
9. Some machismo for the ladies
10. I’m in love so what better colour than pink?
11. I even had to apply a lip gloss… because ladies’ man
12. Baba for the girls
13. Even Mandela was independent for the most part of things
Here’s hoping he lives up to billing with the music because after all the huff and puff that’s really all that matters.
No one is assured of anything permanent as far as stardom is concerned as trends ensure a superstar today could become a random observer tomorrow.
With 2016 winding down, Harry has the new year to consolidate on his new structure, hopefully it is not so arduous seeing as he is still a huge pop item in mainstream radio on the strength of recent, national hits Reggae Blues and Baba For The Girls.
